The Highest Multi-Span Bridge Substructure in Leh, Ladakh built under the guidance of Nitin Goyal
In a remarkable engineering achievement, Mr. Nitin Goyal, Director of SPAR GEO INFRA PVT. LTD., has been recognized for constructing the Col. Santosh Babu Bridge, a 349-meter-long multi-span bridge substructure at an altitude of 14,900 feet. The bridge, located over the Shyok River in Leh, Ladakh (UT), India, was completed in an impressive 174 days and stands as a testament to cutting-edge engineering and construction technologies. The project was completed on October 7, 2023, using TAM grouting micro pile technology, setting a new benchmark for infrastructure development in challenging terrains. The Col. Santosh Babu Bridge is named in honour of the brave Indian Army officer who laid down his life in service of the nation. This project, led by Mr. Nitin Goyal, is a tribute to his legacy and an example of human ingenuity overcoming nature’s toughest challenges. Constructing a multi-span bridge at an altitude of nearly 14,900 feet, where oxygen levels are low, weather conditions are harsh, and the terrain is difficult to navigate, was no easy task. Yet, SPAR GEO INFRA PVT. LTD. achieved this feat with remarkable speed and precision, completing the bridge in just 174 days. The use of TAM grouting micropile technology was instrumental in the successful completion of the bridge. TAM (Tubes à Manchette) grouting involves injecting grout through pre-installed pipes into the foundation soil or rock to strengthen the substructure and improve its load-bearing capacity. This technique ensures the stability of the foundation in weak and highly unpredictable soils, which is crucial in the rugged terrain of Leh, Ladakh.
Micropiles, which are small-diameter piles used for deep foundations, were also utilized to provide additional support. These micropiles can withstand extreme environmental conditions and are ideal for projects in remote, mountainous regions like Ladakh. The combination of TAM grouting and micropiles allowed the construction team to overcome the challenges posed by the region's seismic activity, soft soil, and variable rock formations. Additionally, the altitude and lack of infrastructure posed difficulties in transporting materials and equipment to the construction site. The high altitude also meant that workers had to contend with reduced oxygen levels, which can cause fatigue and health issues, making it even more difficult to maintain the project’s timeline. The Shyok River is located in a region of high geopolitical significance, and the bridge provides critical connectivity for the Indian Army, allowing for the rapid movement of troops, equipment, and supplies. It also enhances access to remote villages and communities in the region, improving transportation and contributing to the overall development of the area.
Mr. Nitin Goyal’s leadership and technical expertise in constructing the highest multi-span bridge substructure have earned him recognition and accolades from various quarters. The successful completion of the Col. Santosh Babu Bridge serves as a shining example of India’s growing capabilities in infrastructure development, even in the most challenging environments. The bridge also stands as a testament to SPAR GEO INFRA PVT. LTD.’s commitment to innovation, safety, and excellence in engineering. Under Mr. Goyal’s direction, the company continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in civil engineering, with a focus on sustainability and long-term durability. The bridge not only serves a critical strategic function but also represents a triumph of human engineering over nature’s harshest conditions. As a milestone in India’s infrastructure development, this project is sure to inspire future generations of engineers and innovators.
