BENGALURU: Karnataka government celebrated the ‘International Day of Democracy’ by creating a 2,500 kilometer-long human chain involving 25 lakh participants to celebrate the International Day of Democracy, which has now been recognized by the World Book of Records as the world’s longest human chain. The programme, symbolizing equality, unity, fraternity, and participative governance, spanned across the state, from Bidar in the north to Chamarajanagar in the south, covering all 31 districts. Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah led the historic programme at the main gathering in front of Vidhana Soudha, the state’s legislative and secretariat headquarters, where he read the preamble of the Constitution. Pramod Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary to Government, Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary to Government, Alok Mohan, IPS, Director General and Inspector General of Police, Karnataka & MLA’s joined by officials, and people from all walks of life, including transgender and differently-abled individuals, who united to form the human chain. The large-scale programme, organized by the Karnataka government in collaboration with civil society groups, aimed to promote democratic values and inclusivity. The certificate was bestowed to Siddaramaiah Chief Minister of Karnataka by Shylaja L. President and CEO of World Book of Records Santosh Shukla, announced the inclusion of the achievement as a new world record. Similar human chains were formed in all districts, with the participation of local ministers, public representatives, and senior officials. The event stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to fostering a democratic society, with active participation from diverse sections of the community.
